Founded in 1764 by Empress Catherine the Great, this museum began with a collection of paintings acquired from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. Celebrated each year on December 7th, Saint Catherine's Day, the Hermitage has been open to the public since 1852 and continues to captivate millions of visitors annually.
Ranked 10th on The Art Newspaper's list of the most visited art museums, with 2,812,913 visitors in 2022, the Hermitage boasts an extensive collection of over three million items, with only a fraction on permanent display. This massive collection spans a large complex of six historic buildings along Palace Embankment, including the iconic Winter Palace, once the residence of Russian emperors. Other notable sites include the Menshikov Palace, Museum of Porcelain, Storage Facility at Staraya Derevnya, and the eastern wing of the General Staff Building.
Led by Mikhail Piotrovsky since July 1992, the Hermitage remains a beacon of cultural heritage. The main museum complex, featuring the Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage, and Hermitage Theatre, welcomes visitors from around the world. While the entrance ticket for foreign tourists costs more than for Russian and Belarusian citizens, entrance is free for all on the third Thursday of each month and daily for students and children.
