The first variation has your feet together, which will improve mobility of your hips, sacroiliac joints, and lumbar spine.

The second variation has your feet spread slightly wider than shoulder-width apart - this will work mostly your hips, with less movement in your sacroiliac joints and lumbar spine.  

Standing hip circles are excellent for warming up your joints before engaging in more intense exercise.  

Always focus on quality over quantity, and aim to feel each part of this range of motion.
