You may find it spelled many ways in middle eastern translations.

The orgins date to Lebanon as the earliest.
Yet Turmeric was a spice (peppery and colorful) more native to India/Asia.
And we have cook books dating to the 1800's of a Semolina Nut cakes in southern Italy.
Of course semolina being the main ingredient in about all Pasta Noodles.

So the true origin of the cake is really hard to determine.
The "who did it first"? Sort of factor.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 Cup Semolina
1/2 Cup Flour
1 Tsp Turmeric
1 1/2 Tsp Baking Powder
1 Cup Milk
1 Cup Sugar
1/2 Cup Veggie Oil
Package of Slivered Almonds
