Airway stenosis is a condition where the airways become narrowed, making it difficult to breathe. This narrowing can be caused by various factors, including inflammation, scar tissue from previous surgeries or infections, tumors, or prolonged use of breathing tubes. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and frequent respiratory infections. Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests such as CT scans or MRI, and direct visualization with bronchoscopy. Treatment depends on the severity of the stenosis and may include medications, dilation procedures, or surgery to remove or bypass the obstruction.
Rigid bronchoscopy with balloon bronchoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat airway stenosis. During the procedure, the patient is placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon inserts a rigid bronchoscope through the mouth and into the airway to visualize the stenosis. Then, a balloon catheter is passed through the bronchoscope and positioned at the site of narrowing. The balloon is inflated to widen the airway and improve airflow. This procedure aims to restore normal breathing and alleviate symptoms caused by the stenosis. The advantages of this approach include its minimally invasive nature, quick recovery time, and effectiveness in relieving airway obstruction.
