Did Jesus have brothers and sisters?

In a couple of places, the gospels mention brothers and sisters of Jesus. The brothers are even listed as James, Joses, Simon, and Jude. Unnamed sisters are mentioned, too, in connection to Jesus.

Here are the two passages:

“’Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?’” (Mark 6:3 with similar wording in Matthew 13:54)

In Mark 3 (also Matthew 12 and Luke 8) Jesus’s mother, brothers, and sisters come to see Jesus, but he points out to the crowd that his true mother and brothers and sisters include “whoever does the will of God.”

It might appear that Jesus had biological siblings, but this would be in opposition to the teaching of the perpetual virginity of Mary.

The Catholic Church teaches that Mary was “Ever-Virgin” meaning she never had relations with Joseph (her “most chaste spouse”).

So, how can we explain the mention of the brothers and sisters?

They are described in the original Greek text as adelphoi, which can mean brother and even sister but also step-brother, half-brother, cousin, or even neighbor.

So, it is possible that these brothers and sisters are actually close relatives like cousins. It is also possible that they were half-brothers and half-sisters from a previous marriage of Joseph.

How can we be sure?

If we look at the birth narratives and early stories of Jesus’s life and childhood, there is no mention of siblings. When Mary and Joseph return to Jerusalem looking for a young Jesus, there is no mention of other siblings to care for.

At the Cross, Mary is there with the disciple John to whom Jesus gives his mother. He didn’t expect James (who is often called the brother of the Lord) to take care of her or any of the other adelphoi. They are never connected in the Acts of the Apostles either.
