Day 151. 27km (80186kms 7yrs)

After packing up in a concrete bunker in the centre of the complex I returned to my preferred cabin beside the beach. I’d previously gathered some firewood here and now set about making a coffee on a fireplace fashioned from a broken toilet bowl. I had a swim and watched as tourists rode by in single file; a horse version of the iconic Broome camel shot.

On pedalling out of this enormous, empty, and entirely open complex I noticed a small flickering screen in a cabin at the exit. Peeking in I was stunned to see a sleeping guard after all! Continuing back along the spit of land I passed by the resorts backing onto the beach. Sadly Djerba’s most famous beach - Sidi Mahres - seems only accessible through these hotel complexes.

I was heading west now and so no longer battling the wind. My first stop in Houmt Souk was the waterfront fort which i found to be closed on Fridays. In the small port I made inquiries about a boat north but it seems I must return the long way around along the mainland. In Houmt Souk’s souq I quickly but belatedly realised this wasn’t a town to just be breezed through so looked for a bed in the souq’s Auberge. At 8 dinar it’s no wonder they were fully booked, but they showed me to the town’s Maison de Jeunese where I got a very fancy room with aircon, wifi, and fridge for 3 times the price; still only about €6!

When things cooled down I re-emerged to explore the souq some more, replacing my broken flip flops at one of the many leather goods stalls, before watching nighttime fall from a busy cafe with a citronnade.
