India is facing a coal crisis. Its power minister has warned that the country's energy crunch could drag on for another half a year. A surge in electricity demand and a slump in local coal output has meant stockpiles are dangerously low. At the end of September, power stations had an average of just four days’ worth of coal. Coal accounts for about 70% of India’s electricity generation, and consumption is expected to rise in the next few years.
