Dental implants can require additional bone grafting after being placed, either immediately or after some time.  When there is some bone loss around a dental implant due to bacterial invasion, compromised bony plates, poor implant positioning, gingivitis or periodontitis, or poor healing, a bone graft can sometimes be required to try and save the dental implant from failure.  Not all bone loss around a dental implant can be restored.  Isolated vertical defects can sometime be repaired whereas complete horizontal bone loss can be difficult or impossible to restore circumferentially.
