Pennsylvania German, known natively as Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch and often anglicized as Pennsylvania Dutch, is spoken by as many 350,000 people in the United States and Canada, especially in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Ontario. An Indo-European language of the Germanic family, it is most closely related to the Rhine Franconian dialects of western Germany, and more distantly so to Dutch, English, and Norwegian, among others.
