Histamine Intolerance: Could it just be a copper deficiency?

Despite the name, histamine intolerance is not an “intolerance” to histamine. Rather, histamine intolerance occurs when you have too much histamine than your body is able to effectively break down.

Treatment often involves cutting out high histamine foods. Unfortunately, although this might help reduce symptoms, it rarely regulates or corrects the issue. Histamine is part of your immune system produced in mast cells in response to injury and in allergic/inflammatory reactions. It is also a neurotransmitter and involved in over 23 physiological reactions on the body.

When histamine is formed it is broken down into N-methyltransferase (in the CNS) and diamine oxidase (DAO – AKA Histaminase Enzyme) in the gut- the main enzyme responsible for breaking down histamine. Without going into the complex science, its action is terminated by metabolic breakdown, which involves conversion to methylhistamine and eliminated via the kidneys. This allows the body to retain optimal amounts of histamine all the time.

Histamine becomes a problem when we have mismanaged metabolic physiology that does not allow us to metabolize histamine properly. If DAO is inhibited, histamine will accumulate in the blood, leading to an array of symptoms such as diarrhea, headache, asthma, hypotension, arrhythmia, tissue swelling, flushing, anxiety, headaches, hives, vertigo and more.

DOA is an enzyme that is dependent on B-vitamins, Vitamin C and Copper. Copper is the central atom of DAO and thus essential for its function of metabolism, oxidation and inactivation of histamine. Copper itself is useless in the body and must be converted, through the use of retinol (Vit. A) to Ceruplasmin (bio-available copper). Essentially Vitamin A is the missing piece to allow us to produce bio-available copper which expresses DAO to neutralize histamine.

Some simple solutions:
1️⃣ Introduce the RTN Method to support your cells in producing energy vs oxidative stress
2️⃣ Vitamin C: Use the adrenal cocktail 2-3x a day
3️⃣ Begin eating organ meats and fatty fish as much or as little as you can. Most contain high amounts of Vitamin A

4️⃣ Utilize dessicated liver daily to increase copper and vitamin A
