Originally written by John Kay and recorded by Steppenwolf on their 1968 album, The Second, "Don't Step on the Grass, Sam" was selected by bluesy jam band Gov't Mule, an offshoot of The Allman Brothers Band as their contribution to Hempilation: Freedom Is NORML in 1995.

The Second peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.

This version of "Don't Step on the Grass, Sam" was recorded at River Sound in New York and produced, engineered and mixed by Michael Barbiero.
