We happened to visit the Portland troll on the day of a festival celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the NW Danish Association. The festival included food, crafts, and a fun activity scavenger hunt for kids.

The Portland troll lives in SW Portland, on the grounds at Nordic Northwest, which is a non-profit that celebrates nordic cultures.

The troll, named Ole Bolle, is in a cluster of red cottages outside a historic home, Fogelbo. The Fogelbo estate, whose name translates in English to “Bird Nest,” was donated to Nordic Northwest.

The troll has his own cottage, and there’s really no missing him once you’re at the cottage village…he’s pretty big.

The troll was designed by a Danish artist, Thomas Dambo, who makes giant troll sculptures around the world out of recycled materials. He built the Portland troll in collaboration with local volunteers. Here is the link to his online troll map showing where the other trolls are around the world: https://trollmap.com/

The Portland troll is part of a set of 6 trolls built in 2023 around the northwest, with the other five in the Seattle area. The Northwest trolls are sponsored by the Scan Design Foundation, which promotes Danish-American cultural exchange.
