This is a video featuring the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel which crosses the James River between Suffolk and Newport News in Virginia. Coverage for this drive is I-664 between VA 135 and US 60.  This facility is one of four underwater highway tunnels in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia and is the newest crossing having opened in 1992. It is one of three major crossings between the Peninsula and South Side areas of Hampton Roads along with the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (I-64 and US 60) and the James River Bridge (US 17). There is also the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry (VA 31) crossing several miles up the James River near Jamestown which can is a minor, but fourth crossing. Since the facility carries I-664, that makes it one of three interstates in the area that travel underwater (the others being I-64 and I-264). An aerial photo of this facility appears in Internet Social Media Memes sometimes with the question, “Have you even seen this bridge that turns into a tunnel in Virginia?”

The name of the facility serves as a memorial to two of the ironclad warships that were engaged in the Battle of Hampton Roads in March 8-9, 1862 about 1 mile east of this area. The names of the two ships were the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia (which was built from the remains of the USS Merrimack).
