The House of Lords is the second or upper chamber of the British Parliament.
Historically it is the oldest legislative chamber of the world.
Its membership is not fixed. It is a permanent house which is never dissolved.
Its members are not elected directly by the people, they are appointed by the King/Queen.
Members come from many walks of life and bring experience and knowledge from a wide range of occupations. Many Members remain active in their fields and have successful careers in business, culture, science, sports, academia, health, politics and public service.
It is generally stated that the house of lords is a hereditary house.
