The 2024 Dacia Spring aims to shake up the affordable electric vehicle segment with its bargain pricing and no-frills approach. On paper, the specs seem modest - a 45 horsepower electric motor linked to a 27.4 kWh battery pack, delivering a claimed 225km of range. But out in the real world, this mini EV feels eager and responsive, with ample power for urban duties. The instant torque from the electric motor gives sprightly acceleration off the line, and its nimble handling makes zipping through city traffic feel almost fun.
The range is perfectly usable for city commutes and short trips, though highway journeys will require more planning. Using a household socket, a full charge takes over 12 hours - not ideal for pressing needs. But the Spring accepts 100kW DC fast charging, with an 80% charge taking under an hour. For budget-minded buyers not relying heavily on road trips, the range anxiety is minimal.
Externally, the Spring announces itself as an affordable EV, with a tall, stubby shape and simplistic detailing. But its friendly face and plastic cladding lend it charm, distinguishing it from the city car crowd. Inside, it's somewhat spare, with plenty of hard plastics reminding you of the price, but it doesn't feel cheap or uncomfortable.
The cabin layout is fuss-free and focused on functionality over flair. Head and legroom are decent for a vehicle of its size. The seats are mounted a little high, giving a commanding view of the road. Cargo space is modest, but usable for shopping runs or small luggage. Overall, it's an honest, back-to-basics interior at home in the urban sprawl.
With its bargain $15,000 starting price, the Dacia Spring isn't loaded with tech. You won't find any leather or ambient lighting. But the basics are covered - there's Bluetooth phone pairing, radio and USB music, plus an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A backup camera adds convenience while parking in tight spots.
For low-cost motoring with a low emissions footprint, the 2024 Dacia Spring makes a compelling case. Its real-world range and performance allow it to slip seamlessly into urban life.
