It depends on how premature you are decides how long you are going to stay in the hospital or in the intensive care. For example if a baby is born at 26 weeks gestation, I would expect the baby to stay in the Intensive Care Unit atleast 6 to 8 weeks. At the same time of the baby is born at 32 to 33 weeks, maybe a week or two would be the stay in the NICU. Also it depends on the problems what the baby goes through in the Intensive Care Unit. If there is an infection or gut issues or a breathing problem, it may take a longer stay or babies sometimes staying through the NICU and they come out of the NICU very quickly as well. So it just varies with the baby. So roughly I would say that it would come closer to the term gestation like 37 to 38 weeks, they need to stay in the hospital for their care and then they can go home.
