In this clip, you will see an overview of the operating room's configuration and how the surgeon performs the robotic surgery.

[Doctors and nurses practicing with robotic surgery equipment]
Speaker 1:
Robotic surgery is performed in a standard operating room. The only difference is three extra pieces of equipment, the robot itself which holds the instruments that are inserted into the patient's body through small incisions, the robotic console where the surgeon sits to control those instruments, and the cart that holds the video monitor allowing the surgical assistant and OR staff to see what's being done inside the patient's body.
Speaker 1:
In the center of the room, there's a bed where the patient lies. Near the patient's head, the anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist administers anesthesia and monitors the patient's vital signs throughout the surgery. Because the surgeon is operating from a console away from the operating table, a physician's assistant is needed to perform robotic surgery. This assistant, usually a physician or a specially trained nurse remains at the patient's bedside and switches out the instruments that the surgeon needs.
Speaker 1:
The operating room technician also stands at the table to hand the appropriate instruments to the physician's assistant. This tech keeps track of the instruments and medications used during the surgery and calls for additional tools when necessary. A registered nurse is in the room as well managing the patient's care throughout the surgery, maintaining a safe and sterile environment and ensuring that the entire operating room team is providing the best care possible.

Speaker 1:
The surgeon begins the procedure at the patient's bedside making the small incisions for the ports or tubes through which the tiny camera and robotic instruments are inserted into the patient's body. The team then helps the surgeon with docking the robot. This is when the robotic arms are attached to the ports. The surgeon then moves to the console located within the room, but away from the operating room table.
Speaker 1:
When the surgery is complete, the surgeon and the team undock the robot, then the surgeon closes the incisions and the patient is taken to the recovery room. The entire operating room staff at the Center for Robotic Surgery is specially trained for robotic procedures, helping not only the surgeon, but most importantly, the patient have a successful outcome.
