STORYLINE:
With 24 days left until Venezuela's presidential election, the electoral process entered its last stretch on Thursday with the official start of the campaign.

The choice will be between the continuity of the political project devised by the late Hugo Chávez or a change of course after 25 years of socialist governments.

Although the 10 candidates, including Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro who aspires to be re-elected for a third six-year term, have been touring the country for months, authorities set the official campaign from July 4 to July 25.

At the start of the campaign events on Thursday in Caracas, both the official campaigns of Maduro and the opposition candidacy of Edmundo Gonzalez, with the support of opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, gathered their followers in the streets of the capital.

“What we have seen has been incredible. Rivers of people, crossing Caracas, and in all the country. I think this is a clear demonstration of what will happen on July 28,” said opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who accompanied opposition presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez on the campaign event.

Venezuela's self-described socialist government under Nicholas Maduro is facing a serious electoral challenge in a presidential election for the first time in decades.

Voting is not mandatory and is done on electronic machines.
