The "Mecidiye Marşı" (March of Abdulmecid) was the imperial anthem of the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Abdülmecid I (1823-1861). It was composed by the Italian composer Giuseppe Donizetti.

Giuseppe Donizetti, also known as Donizetti Pasha, was born on November 6, 1788, and passed away on February 12, 1856. This Italian musician, renowned as the younger brother of the opera composer Gaetano Donizetti, left an indelible mark on the Ottoman Empire. Serving as the Instructor General of the Imperial Ottoman Music from 1828 at the court of Sultan Mahmud II, Donizetti Pasha played a crucial role in introducing European music to the Ottoman military. Having studied music under his uncle Carini Donizetti and later as a pupil of Simone Mayr, he initially served as a band leader in Napoleon's army, participating in various campaigns and even being present at the Battle of Waterloo. Following Napoleon's fall, he continued his career as a bandmaster in the Savoy army.

In the Ottoman Empire, Donizetti Pasha contributed significantly to the modernization of the Ottoman military bands. His influence extended beyond military music, as he taught European-style music at the palace to members of the Ottoman royal family, composed what is believed to be the first national anthem of the Ottoman Empire, supported Italian opera seasons in Pera, organized concerts and operatic performances at court, and hosted renowned virtuosos like Franz Liszt, Parish Alvars, and Leopold de Meyer in Istanbul. Despite being born in Bergamo, Italy, Istanbul became a second home for him, where he lived until his death in 1856. Donizetti Pasha found his final resting place in the vaults of St. Esprit Cathedral, near the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, in Pera. Emre Araci's Turkish biography in 2007 and the volume "Giuseppe Donizetti Pasha: Musical and Historical Trajectories between Italy and Turkey," edited by Federico Spinetti in 2010, further illuminate the life and contributions of this musical luminary.
