From Wayne Green - composer, conductor and vocalist living in Rome, Italy during this confinement period of April 2020 :
"A little history. This song was written, borrowing Dr. Martin Luther King's famous phrase for its title, by Brian Potter and myself in 1989. It was originally sung by Lorraine Fields and the cast of "This Is America: The New World.” She played an immigrant from South Africa, drawn to America by Dr. King’s words. In that version the bridge lyrics were 'Be a candle in the darkness / For the people only seek the light.' The incarnation posted here is a short film made by Dan Arden, Peter Werner & Cory Taylor in 2004. They wanted to show footage of the students at Soka University of America during that portion of the song and asked Brian to write an alternate lyric that would allow that to happen. He wrote, 'From the hillside to the ocean / Youthful voices singing everywhere.' Brian is able under any circumstances, in any time frame, to write something beautiful. I find the opening visuals very touching, all the more so as underscored by the stirring music of Tim Jones. The decision was made to start with one voice, add another, then another, then a big choir. The first voice is mine, the second Satomi Hofmann, the third Linda Addington, then the full ensemble joins. My enduring gratitude to everyone who has been involved with this song at any point." - Wayne Green
