At the Austrian Grand Prix, the intense fight for the lead between Red Bull's Max Verstappen and McLaren's Lando Norris ended abruptly on lap 64, when contact between the two drivers sent them to the pits. Although Verstappen managed to return to the track, Norris had to leave the race prematurely. Commissioners ruled that Verstappen was at fault for the accident, but the Dutch driver maintains that Norris was responsible and that the impact was unavoidable.
Verstappen expressed his frustration: "I'm fed up with this whole race. The fact that we crashed into each other is obviously not ideal. I had the feeling a couple of times that he was braking from too far away, that he was making it very difficult for me to stop the car, so to speak, and we would have collided if I hadn't swerved to the outside or to the right. We'll review it all later, but obviously on our side the race was completely dramatic," he said on camera for Dutch broadcaster Viaplay.
The incident occurred in a slow corner, and both cars ended up with flat tires, forcing them to drive to the pits in those conditions. "This is ultimately very unfortunate and what you don't want to see. It's as simple as that. I'll go back and look at the footage. At this point it's very easy to say something, but it's better to take a good look at what went wrong first. It was a weird angle where we hit each other, very crazy that we both punctured," Verstappen told F1 TV.
Despite the incident, Verstappen and Norris are friends, and the Dutch driver said they will talk about the collision, although not immediately. "Of course we will talk about it, but now is not the time. It's better to wait a bit until everything has cooled down a bit," Max concluded.
This collision between two leading drivers highlights the tensions and competitiveness on the track, and makes it clear that even between friends, incidents can generate controversy and discontent.
