A mutiny had given the Whites control of the starship—but that meant they could never return to Red-ruled Earth!
This novelette features the worlds first colony ship, sent towards Alpha Centauri by the Red World Soviet Government, after a mutiny leaves the ship and its inhabitants in the hands of the rebelling whites, who instead take the ship to Tau Ceti on the off chance they might find an inhabitable planet there.
They do so, but discover other visitors to the planet that are already there, who seem to be technologically far in advance...and hostile.
Poul Anderson writes with his usual flair, blending human ideological conflict and longing for freedom with possible futures and visions of alien worlds, to create an interesting tale with both action, emotion and some thought-provoking concepts and big ideas. Also, it seems Mr. Anderson was not a fan of communism.
Poul Anderson (1926-2001) was American born of Scandinavian descent, and even lived a few years in Denmark before the second world war broke out. A prolific and renowned author of Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Golden Age, many of his stories are inspired by and feature elements from Scandinavian folk tales and Norse sagas.
