Splash Carpentry was hired by a builder from Denver, Colorado to manufacture and finish treads for their open riser stairs. We were provided the specs, signed a contract and this is what we came up with: we used white oak lumber to manufacture the top, bottom and the sides; for the core, we used lightweight LVL; all the parts were glued together with Titebond II; For the finishing part we took the following steps: after receiving a sample of the desired finish from our customer, we sent it back along with a sample of our match; after they examined our sample and they approved it, we prepared the parts for finishing; we are using what the customer is requesting, most of the time the goal is to match the stairs with the hardwood floors; In this case, the stain was a customized one, ordered at a J.C. Licht store in Chicago. We are getting extremely good matches on colors from this particular store. We applied one coat of water base sealer (Bona AmberSeal) and two coats of Infinity waterborne from Glitsa. Along with the treads, we shipped the remaining stain and varnish so our customer can finish other part onsite, such as landings, decoration pieces, railings etc. Stay tuned, in the second part, we will present LED installation in our stair treads, the manufacturing of the stringers and the installation onsite. Thank you for watching.
