🇬🇧 Asian Dub Foundation are thrilled to announce the release of our remastered single "1000 Mirrors" featuring the legendary Sinéad O’Connor and Radiohead’s guitarist Ed O’Brien - produced by the great Adrian Sherwood. Originally recorded in 2003, this new ADF30 master is part of our 30th anniversary celebrations.
Band leader Steve “Chandrasonic” Savale recalls the origins of the song:
"Sinead O’Connor was our generation’s Nina Simone. Like Nina, she wasn’t afraid to put her career on the line in by speaking truth to power. Like Nina she was an excellent songwriter and innovative collaborator. Again like Nina she was one of the greatest ever interpretive singers. Any song she chose, from folk standards like“Cockles and Mussels” to Prince’s “Nothing Compares” would take on an entirely new meaning, as she exposed a song’s innermost beauty and power. So imagine how we felt when she said she wanted to sing one of our songs. The song started with the lead guitar riff that I jammed onstage over a loop provided by Pandit G. The song took shape after I heard about the case of Zoora Shah, a woman wrongly imprisoned for being forced to take action against a deeply abusive husband. I was moved to write the lyrics after hearing a speech by her daughter, Naz, now a Labour MP. I wrote the chords in a downtempo jazz style influenced by The Specials’ third album though of course Dr Das’ bass and Adrian Sherwood’s production took the song to new heights, along with Sonia Mehta’s soaring Alaap vocals. It was Adrian who played mine and Sonia’s original demo to Sinead. I still can’t believe she’s gone."
🇫🇷 Dans le cadre de la célébration de ses 30 ans de carrière à travers ses collaborations emblématiques, Asian Dub Foundation met en lumière son titre "1000 Mirrors" de 2003, enregistré avec la légendaire chanteuse irlandaise Sinéad O'Connor et le guitariste de Radiohead, Ed O'Brien, avec un nouveau master ADF30. Steve Chandra, leader du groupe, se souvient de l’histoire derrière le véritable chef d’œuvre qu’est cette chanson :
Sinead O'Connor était la Nina Simone de notre génération. Comme Nina, elle n'avait pas peur de mettre sa carrière en jeu en disant la vérité au pouvoir. Comme Nina, elle était une excellente compositrice et une collaboratrice innovante. Elle était l'une des plus grandes interprètes de tous les temps. Imaginez ce que nous avons ressenti lorsqu'elle nous a dit qu'elle voulait chanter l'une de nos chansons. La chanson a commencé par un riff de guitare que j'ai improvisé sur scène à partir d'une boucle fournie par Pandit G.
Le titre m'est apparu dans un rêve dont j'ai découvert plus tard qu'il faisait partie du folklore indien. La chanson a pris forme après que j'ai entendu parler du cas de Zoora Shah, une femme emprisonnée à tort pour avoir été forcée de prendre des mesures contre un mari profondément violent. J'ai eu envie d'écrire les paroles après avoir entendu un discours de sa fille, Naz, aujourd'hui députée travailliste. J'ai écrit les accords dans un style jazz downtempo, influencé par le troisième album de The Specials. Bien sûr, la basse de Dr Das et la production d'Adrian Sherwood ont porté la chanson à des sommets incroyables. Et bien sûr, Sonia Mehta a fait entendre sa voix alaap. C'est Adrian qui a fait écouter à Sinead ma démo et celle de Sonia. Je n'arrive toujours pas à croire qu'elle soit partie.
