This week in the markets:

Live fed cattle prices are $2.00 lower on the week, which puts them $17.00 above the same period last year, and feeder cattle prices were not tested, given many markets were closed with the freezing weather. February live cattle were up $2.60 on the week, and March feeder cattle were up $4.50 on the week. Choice box beef was up $11.90 this week, which is $21.00 above the year-ago level. Cash hogs are up $1.20 this week. February lean hog futures were down $1.15 on the week. Pork cutout values were up $2.65 this week, primarily on stronger bellies.

At the end of the week, cattle slaughter was 617,000 head, up 71,000 on the week and down 30,000 for the year. Hog slaughter was 2.652 million head, up 478,000 from the previous week and down 111,000 on the year.

Cattle on feed:

On January 1, cattle on feed inventory was 2.1% higher than the year-ago level, near the pre-report estimate. December 2023 cattle placements were 95.5% of the year ago level and also in line with pre-report expectations. The percentage of heifers on feed, 39.7%, suggests heifers are not being held back for herd rebuilding.

Consumer sentiment:

The January Consumer Sentiment was considerably stronger in January 2024, up 13.1% from December 2023 and up 21.4% from one year ago. Slower inflation growth factored in the increase in optimism.
