Season 3 Episode 1 Mulder is revived by Navajo healing ritual

Albert Holsteen a Navajo elder preforms the Blessing Way healing ceremony in the scared Hogon. However it is up to Mulder to chose whether or not to return to the ether or return to the material world. Mulder of course chooses to remain with us  (as of 2016 new seasons have be produced) but why did he chose to remain?
