I took a 4K video while taking an evening walk around Kichijoji Station on Tokyo's Chuo Line.
The town of Kichijoji is so popular that it is always ranked in the top three of the best places for Japanese people to live.
Although Kichijoji is now bustling with many people, it has a history of development that was triggered by two major disasters in the past.
In 1657, a major fire in Edo (now Tokyo) left many people homeless. Some of the victims moved in groups to Musashino, about 20 km to the west.
In their hometown, there was a temple called Kichijoji, which was unfortunately destroyed by the fire. The people who were attached to the temple named the new place they moved to Kichijoji Village. This is the origin of the name Kichijoji.
Therefore, the temple called Kichijoji is not located near the current Kichijoji Station. After the fire, it was rebuilt in Komagome in what is now Bunkyo Ward.
The next disaster was the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The great earthquake caused great damage to Tokyo. Many of the disaster victims moved to Kichijoji, which led to a rapid increase in population, transforming the area from a former farming community into a residential area.
Today, the atmosphere of Kichijoji differs greatly between the north and south sides of the city, with the station as the boundary.
On the north side, the streets are crowded with people, with large shopping malls and electronics retail stores in addition to a lively shopping district.
On the south side of Kichijoji Station, on the other hand, is Inokashira Park, a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. Many trees surround a vast pond with a circumference of 1.5 km, and you can hear birds chirping overhead. It is recommended for a walk because you can feel such beautiful nature and peaceful air that you may forget that you are in Tokyo, the capital of Japan.
