MOST ASKED QUESTION…
No. You don’t always have to use the motor.

As I ride, I turn the motor off and it acts as a regular bike. When it’s on, it acts as a what is called a “peddle assist”.

MY EBIKE BUYING TIPS.

AS A SENIOR I LIKE….

1. Cruiser style. Sitting upright.

2. Step through style. Easier.

3. Twist grip. Easy.

4. Number of gears. Six is fine and cheaper.

5. Size of motor….
-250 or 350 watts
for medium to big hills and almost all other terrain.

-500 watts
is a bit of overkill. Good for big hills. Good if you need longer distance than 2 hours of riding.

-1000 watts
is a lot of overkill, but better for long distance. Some might say too heavy.

6. Brake type.
Traditional Caliper brakes:
are easiest to adjust and cheaper.

New style Disk brakes:
squeaky and harder to adjust in my experience.

7. Chain guard guide. Try one if your chain pops off regularly.

8. Thumb throttle. Nice but not mandatory.

9. Online buying.

(See my links to handy online bikes buying below)

10. Headlight and luggage rack is included on some bikes.

11. Water bottle bag up high on the handle bars, so you keep your eyes on the road, not low between legs.

12. Bike rack and bag use.

13. Which Style Tires.

Fat tires vs thin:
Fat tires and even medium size like a dirt bike wear faster, so say the bike mechanics.

Thinner tires roll better with less rolling resistance than fat tires…therefore I find thin are easier to peddle.

BIKE SIZE
Don’t be scared and drown in the details but if you really want to get into the weeds about sizing you can go here…

Small fat tire E-bikes:
Fun to ride. Work well. Perfect if you are short. Also work well for regular size folks by moving the handle bars and seat up. Some fold up for travel which is very handy to pop in the trunk. I found them a surprisingly good smooth ride. They can be heavier than regular size bikes, because the fat tires require a heavier, tire and wheel.

Shape:
I like the cruiser because you sit erect. Better for your back and wrists.

Bike shop or online:
Bike shop is best for after service but more expensive and you have to haul your bike to them… vs online buying it comes right to your home in a box.

Note: Mobile e-bike service.  Check and see if there is a mobile bike repair person in your area.

Want somebody else to put it together? Look for Expert Assembly when checking out.

Maintenance: Best is from your local bike shop. Check and see. Although they are not always guaranteed to accept a bike they didn’t sell you, it’s a great resource in your local community.
