Radial tears can occur in
Radial tears can occur in various parts of the meniscus, including the anterior/posterior horns or the body. The manifestation of these tears on MRI varies based on the tear's thickness and location.
Full Thickness Radial Tear - The Ghost Meniscus Sign:
When a radial tear is full thickness, it often exhibits the 'ghost meniscus sign' on MRI. This sign is characterized by an abnormally high signal, which replaces the normally low-signal posterior horn of the meniscus, making the meniscus appear 'ghost-like.'
Partial Thickness Radial Tear - The Truncated Triangle Sign:
In cases of partial thickness radial tears, the 'truncated triangle sign' is observed. This sign shows a sudden termination of the normal triangular meniscal contour, indicating the presence of a radial tear.
The Cleft Sign in Radial Tears:
The 'cleft sign' in radial tears is not specific but varies depending on the tear's location relative to the imaging plane. This sign is crucial in the differential diagnosis of meniscal tears.
Diagnostic Challenge at the Junction of Body and Horn:
Radial tears located at the junction of the meniscus's body and horn can be particularly challenging to diagnose due to their oblique orientation relative to coronal and sagittal plane images on MRI.

Note: "Longitudinal tears run perpendicular to the tibial plateau and parallel to the long axis of the meniscus. They follow the contour of the meniscus, maintaining a consistent distance from the periphery
