Maynard Okereke, the Hip Hop Science MD, meets the Museum of Science’s prehensile-tailed skink. Prehensile-tailed skinks are a type of lizard native to the Solomon Islands, where they are found primarily in the trees. These skinks are unique in that they have a prehensile tail, which they use to grasp onto branches and hold onto their perch. They are completely arboreal, meaning that they spend their entire lives in the trees and rely on their prehensile tail to move around. These skinks are also known as monkey-tailed skinks due to the similarity of their tail to that of a monkey. In addition to their tail, they have an organ in the roof of their mouth called the Jacobson's organ, which helps them detect and identify scents. The prehensile-tailed skink is a fascinating and unique species, with adaptations that have allowed them to thrive in their arboreal habitat.
