Softball Skills: How to Take a Baserunning Lead

Getting on base during a softball game can be exhilarating. But what you do when you get there is just as important. Strong baserunning can make the difference between being called out and scoring a run for your team.

A key to becoming a good baserunner is knowing how to take a proper lead. This begins with your body position. When you are on base, place your left foot on the edge of the bag and position yourself in a sprinter’s stance.

Once you’ve mastered positioning, it’s all about technique. When you push off the bag, take three or four hard steps while keeping your body leaning forward at a 45-degree angle. This will allow you to have the flexibility to either run to the next base or pivot and return to the bag.
