21.5 Aldol Reactions | Organic Chemistry

Chad provides a comprehensive lesson on Aldol Reactions.  A distinction is made between the Aldol Addition product and the Aldol Condensation product.  Detailed mechanisms including all arrow-pushing is included for both the base-catalyzed and the acid-catalyzed aldol reactions.  Self Aldol reactions are contrasted with crossed Aldol reactions and two strategies are provided for achieving good yields for crossed Aldol reactions.  Finally, intramolecular Aldol reactions are considered for compounds with two carbonyl groups including how to predict when they are likely to occur.
