President Moon Jae-in says the key to carbon neutrality will be energy transition,... highlighting the potential of floating solar power plants.
He visited a 41 megawatt facility in Hapcheon, where commercial operations have begun.
"Floating solar power plants built on the surface of dams are considered eco-friendly as they do not require civil engineering nor do they damage forests. The government will expand projects like the Hapcheon floating solar power plant. We will make bold investments focused on the advantages while maintaining the dams' functions safely while preserving the beautiful natural scenery."
This floating solar power plant is the largest in the country... and will generate electricity for some 60-thousand people to use annually.
It's also expected to reduce 30 tons of fine dust and 26-thousand tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
The project also drew attention as it shares profit with the local community through a residence investment program.
South Korea plans to more than double its solar and wind power production facilities by 2025.
