My name is Konstantin Baum – I am a Master of Wine and today I am going to dive deep into a somewhat underrated region in the southern Rhône: Gigondas. As you have asked me to talk more about ageability and Terroir I have prepared 5 different wines from five different vintages that I am going to taste with you. A few weeks ago I ran a seminar on Gigondas, and I was fascinated by the region and thought that this would be an interesting topic for a video. Gigondas is an AOC in the Southern Rhone – close to Chateauneuf du Pape the most well know region down there. Chateauneuf is also producing white wine but Gigondas has a clearer focus with 99% of the production being red wine one percent being Rosé. Gigondas has also only a bit more than a third of the vineyards that Chateauneuf has as 220 Growers are farming 1217 hectares of vineyards and the overall yields are pretty small with an average of 30 hl/ha. Even though the region is small and has a clear focus it has very different terroirs. First of all, there is a big difference in altitude as the area goes from 100 m above sea level to 730 ms above sea level.
This difference has a strong impact on grape growing as the temperatures decrease the higher up in altitude you go and that means that vines in the higher vineyards need more time to ripen the fruit.
