Barn owl Willow's 3 chicks were so adorable. This film takes you back to early spring when they were just balls of fluff and follows each developmental milestone as they grew. Watch Willow and Ghost interact live on my nest cam:    • Live From Fotherdale | Robert E Fuller   and follow their story in this playlist:    • Barn Owls 🦉Willow & Ghost | Wild Live... … JOIN MY MISSION ____________________ You can support my wildlife rehabilitation and conservation work by donating here: www.paypal.com/donate/?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button… or joining one of my supporter communities: www.robertefuller.com/support_and_donate/ ABOUT THIS FILM ____________________ Three barn owl chicks Willow's three chicks, Skye, Spirit and Echo, hatched days apart. At 22 days old, the eldest chick Skye's heart shaped facial disk was just developing. Spirit and Echo, hatched later than Skye. At 20 and 17 days old they still relied on mum Willow for warmth. The barn owl nest is cramped Space was tight in sycamore stump. On warmer days Willow would stand outside and the chicks used each other for warmth. Barn owlet's first 'stand' Skye & Spirit are the first to learn to stand up. Whereas, the youngest chick Echo is solely focused on staying warm and huddles up to her siblings. Male Ghost provides food Dad Ghost is an excellent hunter and the chicks grow up strong with his steady supply of voles, and the occasional toad! Whilst mum willow cleans off Sharing a nest with three barn owls chicks can leave your feathers in a mess. Female barn owls often need to bathe to keep clean. Watch Willow take a much needed break to cool off and bathe. Chicks now home alone By the time oldest chick Skye is 4 weeks old, Willow has moved out of the nest. She stays nearby to keep close eye but from now on the chicks are home alone. With more room in the nest The extra space seems to accelerate these barn owl chicks' development and they become more active, stretching their wings and hopping about. Owlet's first peek outside Skye finds the entrance and takes her first peek at the outside world. This is a huge milestone for this young barn owl. Unseasonable snow All of a sudden the temperature plummets and I start to worry about these chicks out there alone. But the three barn owl chicks seem unconcerned. Owlet's first feathers The barn owl chicks flight feathers grow through. You can see the waxy cuticles on the pin feathers falling to the floor as they make room for the new flight feathers. Sibling squabbles The three barn owl chicks seem to have a close bond and often huddle together. But at dinner time, it's a different story! All 3 barn owl chicks peer outside Watch as one by one the three chicks discover the world outside their nest and begin to spend their days watching from the nest entrance. Sexing barn owl chicks The darker ring around Skye's facial disc tells me she is a female, whilst Spirit's pale ring suggest he is male. Meanwhile Echo's markings suggest she is female… but its still too early to tell. Next time Join me next time to watch the chicks get their ID rings and take their first flights.
