TL;DW
Pat has become locked in editing purgatory. He wants this book to be the best it could be, and that's such a nonspecific goal that its just never going to happen. The first book happened because he had a drive and passion. Over the next 4 years, he lost his passion to write due to the incessant pressure and nagging of the fanbase, much of it merited, and published the book at his editors request. With pressure from the publisher, as well as hounding fans, he managed to get a draft done that he was satisfied with. After that he has repeatedly said he feels less pressure. (Video) That alongside the lack of a drive that he has mentioned numerous times, AND the bonus of the publisher clearly not pushing him at all, has resulted in a shattered effort. He has taken a back seat. He no longer feels passion nor a need to complete the draft, and the responsibility of the book is no longer enough to push him. He writes in his free time and has instead retired to being the token online geek. He does podcasts, DnD, livestreams, QnAs, charities, board games, tv work, and everything else under the sun, because he doesn't need to write the book. Whos gonna make him now? The sales have grown, and his fanbase isn't shrinking. People will wait. So he will too. With so much else he's doing, its no wonder he hasn't published Doors of Stone.
This is the deal with Doors of Stone. Pat has not expressly given up, but he has essentially done so. He has made his living as a geek on the internet, riding on the overwhelming success of the first two books, which, lets be real, has been propelled by the legendary status of Rothfuss’s incompleteness. People talk about it, and so others buy it. And Pat knows full well what’ll happen to his sales as soon as he ends the trilogy. With no more talk of theories and the hype completely gone, this trilogy wont sell anymore, and any other books he writes will not sell after the mess that was Doors of Stone.
So the question of What's the Deal with doors of stone is clearly answered. Pat had a million reasons to not care, and another million to never finish it. Our pestering could never live up to the sheer lack of motivation to wrap it up.
But at the end of the day, I see what he says about Book 3. He wants it to be done. He is sick and tired of the slack he gets because of the 9 year wait, and would love to finish this chapter of his life, despite having so much incentive to wait longer. I do believe he thinks he's trying to edit it. I think he wants to make his fans happy. I think he really he wants to make sure he puts out the best book he can… but there's just too much against him. He wants it, in theory, but he has no reason to work for it. He worked on Book 3 in 2013, but has lost the drive to finish. And so, I don't see an end to this. Even if he steps up to put more effort into editing, it'll still be an endless process with the lack of reason to put his foot down and call it complete. There is no clear end to the cycle, and so, this is another reason I believe Doors of Stone will never come out.
And that sucks.
