S.H. Raza created "Saurashtra" Raza in the early 1980s, combining his two separate painting approaches, one being gestural strokes and the other being Abstractionism. The format of this work, as well as the virtual frame that surround it, resembles one of Rajasthan's 17th-century miniature paintings, which were filled with a wide range of warm colors such as orange, yellow, saffron, crimson red, burnt sienna, pale greens, and black, all of which together tell a story of a hot, dusty, and vegetative India. The lower half of the canvas contains more controlled and short brush strokes, as well as a network of crossing triangles, while the top half has larger and thicker areas of sienna and green. S.H. Raza, or Sayed Haider Raza, is a well-known artist in India. Raza was born on February 22, 1922, in Madhya Pradesh, and together with other renowned artists such as M.F. Husain, F.N. Souza, and Akbar Padamsee, who were all members of the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group, was essential in stabilizing a unique modernist identity for Indian art (PAG). S.H. Raza has received the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan from the Government of India for his main contribution to Indian art. In July 2015, Raza received the highest civilian honor bestowed by the French government, the 'Legion of Honor.'
