There were over 360,000 Irish born people living in England & Wales in 1921 reflecting the ongoing migration out of Ireland in search of work and opportunity. Approximately 80% of all Irish emigrants in 1921 travelled to Britain, and the majority were women. Their story is an important part of the 1921 census returns for England & Wales. But there were also millions of descendants of those impoverished Irish famine migrants that had settled in Britain in the 19th century and earlier. The lives and travails of their descendants are richly documented in this exciting new source.
