TRG 2012: Tomato Stem Pruning: Single, Double and Triple Stems

Tomatoes are vines that can be pruned to single, double and triple stems. The more stems you have the more fruit you will get. However, more fruit may mean smaller fruit. Pruning not only helps with disease management but also gives you a choice on how many stems you want on your tomato plants. If you want to grow a 2 pound tomato, you want fewer stems and fewer fruit. The energy of the plant will go into fewer fruit but it will be used to produce larger fruit. How many stems you want is a choice.
