Last week the Operation Adventure team traveled to Southport, NC visiting the filming locations for the 90s horror classic, I Know What You Did Last Summer. The film, which was based in Southport, filmed throughout the small fishing village; however, it also filmed an hour north in the small historic town of Burgaw, North Carolina. Named after a group of Native Americans that resided alongside a creek in the western Pender County, Burgaw, North Carolina was initially settled in 1850; however, wasn’t incorporated until 1879. In 1985, Hollywood came calling and since the mid-80s, 18 productions have been produced in Burgaw. Located on the town square is Harrell’s Department Store, which was founded in 1903 as C. Harrell & Sons. This location served as Shivers Department Store in the film, which was also a family owned and operated business. In the movie, Elsa’s father has put her in charge of the store and when Helen moves back from New York she begins working as the fragrance girl. In the novel, which the film is based on, this is slightly different. While Elsa does work in a department store, Wards Department Store, to be more precise she doesn’t work in a family owned business. In-fact their father works in construction. Also in the novel, Helen works as the Channel 5 Golden Girl and has found success as a local celebrity. We've sprinkled a few more fun facts within the gallery below as well as the episode itself so make sure to tune in and enjoy!
