Forerunners were HUMANS... until Halo 3 (Halo Lore)

The Forerunners were originally planned to be Humans, evidenced when Guilty Spark says to Master Chief, "You are Forerunner". A common misconception is that it was 343 Industries that adapted them to be a separate species in Halo 4, but this is not the case. The change actually occurred during the development of Halo 3 under Bungie's direction. Why, then, does Contact Harvest refer to them as being Humans, despite being released after Halo 3? Today we attempt to answer this by exploring the murky development of the mysterious Forerunner's backstory.
