Introducing the Johan Marais range
Introducing the Johan Marais range of snake tongs - our new and improved design of our best selling PRO Snake Handling Tongs.
Snake tongs have been around since the early 1960’s and are used by herpetologists and snake parks throughout the world. The basic design has barely changed over the years and some brands that were used at the old Transvaal Snake Park back in the 1970’s are still exactly the same.
We have been using snake tongs extensively in our training sessions over the past ten years and have literally sold thousands of sets. Our PRO series is by far the biggest selling snake tong in Africa.
Like any tool, snake tongs work well in experienced hands and in the 40-odd years that I have used snake tongs I have never hurt a snake. We have, however, found that when using snake tongs on large snakes, some tongs pinch the snake if caught at mid body. This is because the overbite section of the upper jaw of the tong is too short and in most tongs it extends around 1.5 cm.
After playing around with various options and testing them, we have now modified our tongs so that the overbite extends 3.4 cm and the tongs work far better. One also needs to check the gap between the upper and lower parts of the jaw when the tongs are closed – this should be no larger than 1 – 2 mm. In other words the two sections should nearly touch. Otherwise the snake is easily pinched and it is impossible to catch smallish snakes.
Lastly there have been some unfounded complaints about the steel cable failing. We have never had a single cable snap and we now double crimp the cable on each side of the snake tong.
The JM series of snake tongs come with a guarantee for normal use.
