In the Cambodian School videos, we mainly use the textbook called "Siev Pheuv Rien An" by Dr. Setharin Penn, PhD. The format of these videos is to go over lesson by lesson by reading the Khmer text, providing pronunciation phonetically when necessary, definition and writing when applicable, and recommending assignment. On review lessons, we include exercises and quizzes. For Lessons1&2, we added rules, exceptions and examples for your references and to help explain the words used in the examples. From experience, students are able to learn beyond what's being taught when they understand the rules and the exceptions. So, please do not feel discouraged or overwhelmed by the information provided in these two lessons. The take away from lessons 1&2 is just to recognize the vowels, the consonants and their sounds. If you don't get it the first few times, don't worry about it as each vowel and consonant will be covered in detail in future lessons, starting from Lesson 3. However, you can go back to Lessons 1&2 to review Khmer vowels and Khmer consonants as needed.
Khmer is a beautiful language with a rich culture. It's not too difficult to learn as it has vowels and consonants. The difficult part is to remember them. Once you know them, reading Khmer is fairly straight forward. My advice is to do whatever works for you to remember them, which will help you to go through the rest of the lessons easily and quickly. The time that will take you to learn Khmer depends on how much time you put to learning it. The more practice you do to read and write Khmer, the sooner you'll know how to read and write Khmer. I'm glad you're taking the first step to learning Khmer.
