When you hire a mover to pack, they will pack your everyday dishes so that their weight is easily distributed. This is key if you are doing it yourself as well. You’ll want to pack your largest dishes first. Next, you’ll need to pack your everyday dishes on the vertical, and also on the horizontal, in order to maximize space.

Presenter: This video is going to be on the medium box from the kitchen area; and I’m going to show you how to pack your everyday dishes in a medium box. The first thing you want to do is put four/five sheets of paper crumpled up in the bottom. I like to start with the largest dishes first, I wrap them individually. Each one gets its own sheets and I make a stack of them somewhere nearby and pack them all in the box at once. You want to pack all your dishware and china on the vertical; and that means you are going to pack them like dishes in a dishwasher or books on a shelf. The theory behind this is, if you pack them like this, if any weight comes on them it is spread out, whereas if you pack it like this any weight gets transferred down through the dishes and this poor bottom dish and they usually get chipped or broken.

So, you start with the biggest dishes first and you wrap them up. I like packing all the dishes the same way because you wind up having a little extra paper on one side and that is a good thing as long as you do it the same, then that extra cushion actually winds up being in between your dishes. Now I’ve got seven or eight dishes here, I am going to take them as a group and create a column of these and turn the column on its side and put them on their edge in the corner of the box. Then, I’ll find the next biggest plate and continue. Again a nice small column and it goes down on the vertical.

Now my choice is a much smaller plate or these big side bowls and onion bowls. So now I have a hold of the bowls and put them right down. Then you have a little bit of space over here. Now, you don't need to continually pack like this, you can pack some this way to help fill in the space. Now I am left with this little small space but you can almost always find something to fit these spaces. So now, I have a big layer of dishes and so, what I want to do is put some paper down to kind of even up the space and put on the tops of the dishes because we do want to put more content on the top of this box. So, what you want to put next is anything a little bit lighter but also breakable, glasses, mugs. If you do glasses, just make sure that…obviously there’s different size dishes under here to ultimately make sure it's going to fit. This would be no good, but over here where there is a smaller bowl it fits quite nicely. Coffee mugs are another excellent thing, they are fairly tough. You just wrap them up and put down on top and you can do multiples. Or, you could get rid of lots of space all at once. I don't see the need to individually wrap these but they will fit down in there nicely however I do usually like to put paper on it to keep everything together. When you do large items like this you can use two or three pieces on it instead of one because one might just rip.

And, once again you are at the top. Again, if you have a little gap like this, excellent things are paper towels, napkins, sippy cups, plastic stuff, anything like that will fill up. If you come across and you don't have any of that stuff left, it's one of the last boxes, just crumple up three or four sheets of paper to help spread out the load and close up the box. And this is your medium box in the kitchen filled with your everyday dishes.
