President Benigno S. Aquino III led the flag raising ceremony at Rizal Park to celebrate the 118th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence with the theme “Kalayaan 2016: Pagkakaisa, Pag-aambagan, Pagsulong.”
The President was accorded full military honors and a 21-gun salute upon his arrival, and was welcomed by the Acting Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Lt. Gen. Glorioso Miranda.
After the flag raising ceremony, the President headed the wreath-laying ceremony to honor the country’s national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal. This was followed by a fly-by viewing of various Philippine Air Force (PAF) aircrafts.
Other flag raising and wreath-laying ceremonies were simultaneously conducted across the country, namely at the Heritage Park in Imus, Cavite; Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite; Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan; Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine in San Juan City; Mausoleo de los Veteranos de la Revolucion in Manila North Cemetery; Bonifacio National Monument in Caloocan City; Museum of Philippine Social History in Angeles City, Pampanga; Quezon City Hall; Cebu City Hall; and Davao City Hall.
After the wreath-laying ceremony, the President proceeded to the launching of the book entitled “A Sense of Nation: The Birthright of Rizal, Bonifacio, and Mabini” at the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) Grounds in Kalaw Street, Manila.
