The Pythagorean Theorem says that for any right triangle, a^2+b^2=c^2. This means if you know two of the sides, you can solve a basic equation to find the length of the third side. When studying the Pythagorean Theorem, it is common to see examples where all 3 sides are integers. These are called "Pythagorean Triples", and there are an infinite number of these triangles. The Pythagorean Theorem only works for right triangles. For acute or obtuse triangles, you need to use a more general formula: the law of cosines.
