Hundreds of visitors to Mecca
Hundreds of visitors to Mecca have died during the annual Muslim pilgrimage due to the scorching heat hitting the region these days, according to foreign ministries. Specifically, at least 550 people would have died during the hajj, according to what Arab diplomats told Agence France Presse. Of these, 323 were Egyptians, most of whom died due to illnesses related to high temperatures.
Stampedes, tent fires and other accidents have caused hundreds of deaths during the hajj in Saudi Arabia over the past 30 years. The pilgrimage began on Friday.
