Canadian Agriculture: A Strong and Growing Sector

Canada’s agricultural sector produces a diverse basket of high-quality foods that are in demand across the country and exported around the world. Working with the provinces and territories, the Government of Canada supports the sector through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, and through investments in research science and innovation, which help it continue to grow and to employ 2.3 million Canadians.

The Canadian agriculture and agri-food sector is strong and growing.
Our farms grow a wide range of products.  The common element? Smart, hard-working farmers and their families.  97% of our farms are family-owned.
We have close to 12,000 business locations processing everything on your shopping list, from bread to soups, from lentils to wine and from meat to pickles.  And of course...maple syrup.  It's diverse and the list keeps expanding.
From farms and equipment, to processors, grocers and restaurants, the sector employs more than 2.3 million Canadians.
We have thriving markets in Asia, new free trade deals, and more in the works.  The world loves Canada's safe, high-quality food.
We've been steady producers. Farm cash receipts have risen for seven consecutive years.
2017 was our second best year on record for total net cash income.  Our results are full-bodied with a bright finish.
The sector is making important and valuable advances in science and innovation too.
Canada's federal, provincial and territorial governments invested $541 million in research in 2017-2018.  And the investments are effective.  In wheat research alone, we know that for every dollar spent on research, there is a net return of 20 dollars to farmers.
Our governments consulted extensively with the sector and launched the Canadian Agricultural Partnership in April 2018.  The Partnership features simplified programs and services that are easier to access and better reflect emerging priorities.
The partnership will help the sector innovate, grow and prosper.  The Partnership will help the sector innovate, grow and prosper - over the next five years and beyond.
