Water is cold, reel 'em slow. This is the conventional wisdom for winter crankbait fishing, but if there's one thing the last few years have taught us, it's that bass don't follow our rules. Clent Davis proves the point by catching several winter bass by burning downsized crankbaits.

In Clent's opinion, the nationwide phenomena of high school and college bass fishing have dramatically increased fishing pressure. Savvy anglers have found that downsized baits often generate more bites from conditioned bass. Additionally, Davis believes speed is a powerful trigger, including during the winter months. Forcing reaction strikes aside, speed is also one of the best masks of an artificial lure by not affording bass the chance to visually inspect the bait.
