Some families who rely on nursing homes to take care of loved ones, who can't get the same kind of care at home, are concerned about the complaint process. Married for 26 years, Mary Herring said her husband, Mark Herring, was smart, caring and lots of fun. The retired NASA engineer died at age 80. Since then, Mary Herring has been on a mission, describing her concerns about his stay at Autumn Lake Health Care at Spa Creek in Annapolis, and reporting them to state officials. Mark Herring had a brain tumor, and his wife said he was doing extremely well with treatment. He went to the nursing home for rehabilitation after a fall. An estimated two-week stay turned into seven weeks.
